World Premiere of Work by Wendell Logan at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago

By Marci Janas '91

Composer Wendell Logan

Doxology Opera: The Doxy Canticles, a music theater piece in one act by composer Wendell Logan and librettist Paul Carter Harrison, will have its world premiere at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago next weekend. The performance is co-presented by the Center for Black Music Research and the Museum.
Logan is chair of Oberlin's jazz studies program and professor of African-American music. Harrison is writer-in- residence at Columbia College Chicago.

The opera is based on historic events in the South, and invokes a young woman's search for spiritual balance in the real world. The commissioning of the work was made possible by a grant from the Meet the Composer/Reader's digest Commissioning Program, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund.
