Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble Concert Includes Work by Faculty Composer Anna Rubin

By Charity Johnson ('99)

The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, conducted by Associate Professor of Conducting Timothy Weiss and guest conductor Mitchell Arnold, will present a free, public concert Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 8 P.M. in Finney Chapel.

The program includes Assistant Professor of Composition Anna Rubin's Dreaming Fire, Tasting Rain. Premiered at Princeton University in 1995, the piece was chosen for performance in Washington D.C. in June for an International Alliance of Women Composers concert.

The imagery in the title intrigued Rubin, she says, "because of the logically contradictory--but emotionally consistent--confluence of the two images of fire and water."

The program also features George Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children, with Associate Professor of Singing Lorraine Manz, and girl soprano Katie Dauphin, a member of the Oberlin Choristers, directed by Katherine Plank. Alban Berg's Chamber Concerto for Piano, Violin and Winds, Op 8, features Professor of Pianoforte Monique Duphil and Professor of Violin Marilyn McDonald as soloists.
