Marc Benamou A member of the Oberlin Gamelan from 1977-79, Marc Benamou studied piano with former Conservatory faculty member Wilbur Price and ethnomusicology with Roderic Knight. After receiving his BA degree in music from the college, he attended the University of Michigan, earning an MA in philosophy and an MA in ethnomusicology. He served as director of the University of Michigan Javanese gamelan from 1986-88 and from 1992-94. He spent three years of field research in Java, where he performed with numerous ensembles and appeared frequently as a vocalist on radio programs devoted to traditional music. This work culminated in a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Michigan, in 1998. A native of France, where he received a degree in teaching English as a second language, Benamou has taught at private language institutes in France, at the University of Alberta, and at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Concurrent with his Oberlin residency, he taught a graduate ethnomusicology seminar at Ohio State University. |
