By Charity Johnson ('99)

Phyllis Young, professor of cello and string pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, will present "Playing the String Game," a free, two-day string pedagogy workshop for music education majors and string performance majors.

Here is the schedule:

"Bows that can Sing, Dance, Talk and Whisper" Monday, Nov. 13, 12-1 pm

"Vibrato: The Great Beautifier" Tuesday, Nov. 14, 11 am-12 pm

Both sessions will be held in Central room 25 of the Conservatory; string players are asked to bring their instruments.

Young served as national president of the American String Teachers Association, and received its 1984 Distinguished Service Award. She directed the University of Texas String Project, a large teacher training program, and has presented workshops and master classes in 27 countries and 43 states. In October, she was honored by Indiana University with the Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center's Award and was bestowed the title, "Grand Dame du Violoncelle." Young is the author of two string pedagogy books, String Play and Playing the String Game, published by the University of Texas Press.
