Dr. Carolynn Lindeman (Bmus '62), professor of music at San Francisco State University and past president of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, has been appointed by President Bill Clinton to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

According to a press release issued by The White House, this advisory committee advises and consults with the board of trustees for the John F. Kenedy Center for the Performing Arts, making recommendations to the board regarding existing and prospective cultural activities to be featured at the center.

"Carolynn Lindeman will be a most eloquent spokesperson for the arts--for their own sake, and for their role in the development of the whole person and of a vital society." says Dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music Robert Dodson.

Lindeman is a widely published author of more than 50 articles on music education and several books--including The Musical Classroom: Backgrounds, Models and Skills for Elementary Teaching, and PianoLab: An Introduction to Class Piano. She serves on the board of directors for the International Society for Music Education and on the National Committee of Examiners in Music for Educational Testing Service.

She has lectured on music education in almost every state in the United States and in Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, Mexico, South Africa, and Israel.

Besides receiving her baccalaureate degree from Oberlin, Lindeman studied at the Mozarteum Academy in Austria and received an M.A. in music from San Francisco State University and a D.M.A. fro Stanford University.
