Fall auditions for Oberlin College Community Strings will be held at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, 77 W. College St. in Oberlin, Saturday, Sept. 2, and Sunday, Sept. 3, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Bibbins 108. Sign-up sheets will be posted in advance outside Bibbins 108.

Strings founder and music director Philip Highfill, professor of accompanying, offers this advice for those planning to audition: "Please arrive prepared with any solo piece or extended orchestral excerpt that best represents your playing. Auditions for returning members are optional; seating will be based on your most recent audition."

College Community Strings is open to students, faculty, staff and townspeople, and approximately 40 musicians comprise the ensemble. "It was founded," says Highfill, "to create more performance opportunities for all serious musicians, not simply those at the Conservatory. Both in its artistic ambitions and the nature of its membership, Oberlin College Community Strings is more than the typical community orchestra--it is the only Oberlin ensemble specializing in music for string orchestra."

Rehearsals are held in the Conservatory's Orchestra Room every Tuesday evening, 7 to 9 P.M., beginning Sept. 5.

This fall's program, to be performed December 7 in Finney Chapel, includes music by Purcell, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Ernest Bloch, and features a collaboration with the Black River Singers, directed by Marci Alegant, Oberlin College assistant director of major gifts.

For further information, please contact music director Philip Highfill (440/775-8226, 440/774-2157, or philip.highfill@oberlin.edu).
