Open Rehearsal/Improv Clinic 12:30-4:30 p.m. Central 34 in the Conservatory Concert with members the Oberlin
Jazz Ensemble
Prior to his arrival at Oberlin, Pilzecker discussed his Improv Clinic this way, "After having been around a great many classical musicians (Aspen Music Festival, Eastman/Manhattan schools, running a classical/jazz concert series), I've come to believe that the way a classical musician creates and the way a jazz musician creates are really quite different from one another. This goes well beyond the simple rhythmic performance concept of 'swing' vs 'straight' eighth notes. We should, most importantly, revel in theses differences which have to do primarily with intention, as there is so much to learn from each approach - each philosophy. Of course, there are more similarities than differences. Be it improvised or pre-composed sounds, both classical and jazz musicians use language - the SAME language, but in different ways. This simple realization provides a sense of relief for many in a clinic situation when things are broken down a bit. It doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on, all of us need to be playful, spontaneous, and able to deal intelligently with a sense of structure in the music." |
