The Passion: A musical setting of the Crucifixion story as recorded in the Gospels.

Oberlin College Conservatory of Music is pleased to present the Santa Fe Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's acclaimed St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, on Monday, April 10, 7 p.m., in Finney Chapel at Oberlin College. The performance is part of Santa Fe Pro Musica's Santa Fe Bach Festival, which travels to five cities in April 2000. The concert, to be performed on original instruments, is free and open to the public.

Conservatory dean Robert Dodson says, "Everyone should have at least one opportunity to hear the St. Matthew Passion in person; this magnificent work is undoubtedly one of the great achievements of our civilization."

Kenneth Slowik, artistic director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society and artistic director of Oberlin Conservatory's Baroque Performance Institute, will conduct. In his program notes, Slowik writes about Passion composition, "The two monumental passion settings that survive from the pen of J.S. Bach (the St. John Passion, BWV 245 and the St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244) are universally acknowledged as the pinnacle of perfection in the genre. For some listeners, the musical beauty alone of these works sets them far above all similar compositions."

"This performance of St. Matthew Passion," says Michael Lynn, associate professor of recorder and baroque flute and associate dean at Oberlin Conservatory, and member of Apollo's Fire, "offers a rare opportunity to hear one of Bach's greatest works, performed on original instruments. By baroque standards, this is a very large piece. Two chamber orchestras perform in this piece, which logistically makes it a much more difficult piece to offer than, say, Bach's St. John Passion. That it is free to the public, especially in a performance by such a high calibre chamber orchestra as Santa Fe Pro Musica, is an added bonus."
