About the Performers

Angela Cheng, associate professor of piano, was born in Hong Kong and received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and her Master of Music degree from Indiana University where she was a student of Menahem Pressler. In 1986 Cheng was the Gold Medal winner at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition; in 1988 she was the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition. In the same year, the Canada Council awarded Cheng its coveted Career Development Grant. For her interpretations of Mozart, she received the Medal of Excellence at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1991. In the United States, Cheng has appeared as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Boston, St. Louis, Houston, Indianapolis, Utah, Syracuse, New Orleans, Grand Rapids and Honolulu. Outside of the U.S. she has appeared with the Israel Philharmonic and every major orchestra in Canada. She has performed as solo recitalist and in chamber groups throughout North America and Europe. Cheng has recorded on Koch International and CBC Records.

Alvin Chow, associate professor of piano, has performed in duo-piano recitals not only with his wife, but also with his twin brother, Alan. A native of Miami, Florida, he graduated as Co-Valedictorian at the University of Maryland, where he was a student of Nelita True. Chow received the Victor Herbert Prize in Piano upon graduation from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Sascha Gorodnitzki, and held the Joseph Battista Memorial Scholarship at Indiana University as a student of Menahem Pressler. Chow has received top prizes in numerous competitions and has performed in such major concert halls as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Steinway Hall in New York City, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. As a soloist, Chow has appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, among others. During 1987-88 he was the first Fulbright college Visiting Artist in Piano at the University of Arkansas. He has also taught at Southwest Missouri State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
