"In my view, Cage's entire musical output can be seen as a delta in which six streams or substantial categories of compositional techniques can be distinguished. In my lecture I want to focus on one of those streams, which Cage himself has called 'gamuts of tones.'" Van Emmerik adds, "This concept serves not only to illustrate how Cage dealt with pitch - a subject rarely touched upon in discussions of his music - but also that Cage's approach to pitch and harmony is based on axioms similar to those of what has been called integral serialism." Dr. Paul van Emmerik studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam and completed his Ph.D. on the Music of John Cage. He currently is working on John Milton Cage: A Guide for Research, due for a 2000 publication with Garland Publishing in New York.
