On Tuesday, November 30, 4:30 p.m., in Bibbins 223, the Division of Musicology will sponsor a lecture on the music of John Cage by visiting lecturer Paul van Emmerik . "For a long time I have been fascinated by the music of John Cage," says van Emmerik, Associate Professor of Musicology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. "I have made this fascination productive since the early 1990s in various articles, CD liner notes and in my Ph.D. dissertation, which deals what I have called systematic tendencies in Cage's compositional techniques.

"In my view, Cage's entire musical output can be seen as a delta in which six streams or substantial categories of compositional techniques can be distinguished. In my lecture I want to focus on one of those streams, which Cage himself has called 'gamuts of tones.'"

Van Emmerik adds, "This concept serves not only to illustrate how Cage dealt with pitch - a subject rarely touched upon in discussions of his music - but also that Cage's approach to pitch and harmony is based on axioms similar to those of what has been called integral serialism."

Dr. Paul van Emmerik studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam and completed his Ph.D. on the Music of John Cage. He currently is working on John Milton Cage: A Guide for Research, due for a 2000 publication with Garland Publishing in New York.
