"Emmanuel Séjourné is one of the world's best vibraphone players," says professor of percussion Michael Rosen, who invited Séjourné to perform at Oberlin on Tuesday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. in Kulas Recital Hall. "He will be featured at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Columbus the same week, so I thought that while he was in the area, I'd invite him to Oberlin for a performance and master class. He is in the midst of a concert tour of the United States right now so his stop here is very fortuitous. His program will be imaginative and interesting. It's all really terrific stuff."

Séjourné's recital at Oberlin will include three original works. He will be joined in performance by double degree junior Scott Forth, of Orange Park, New York; senior David Schotzko, of Aitkin, Minnesota; and junior Adam Sliwinski of Hudson, Ohio, all on marimba.

About Emmanuel Séjourné

In 1981 Séjourné founded the ensemble NOCO MUSIC, with which he has performed all over the world. Their CD Saxophones et Percussions won the European Audio-visual Grand Prix awarded by the Académie du Disque Français.

Séjourné is head of the percussion pedagogy department of the Strasbourg Conservatory. He specializes in keyboard percussion -- an area in which he has created a course of study for highly advanced players, the first of its kind in France. He has authored a vibraphone method book, Éditions Leduc and several pieces for percussion, including Éditions Fuzeau, Lemoine, Combre, Alfonce, Aug Zurfluh, and Zimmermann. He was nominated Pedagogical Adviser to the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs for designing preparatory classes towards an advanced teaching certificate for percussion. His master classes have been received with great success in the most renowned conservatories. This year he will lead masterclasses in Japan, the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris, and the International Summer Academy of Belgium.

Having been requested by composers to develop the contemporary vibraphone and marimba repertoire, Séjourné introduced the use of six sticks and the use of the vibra-midi, thus opening and broadening instrumental perspectives in percussion performance.

Séjourné has made a number of recordings on many recording labels, including Montaigne, Accord Una Corda, Etcetera, Musifrance, Erato and for the jazz label MFP Berlin. His latest CD Christal Records which included the C. Kerger Concerto, was performed with Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg under the direction of Paul Polivnick, director of orchestras at Oberlin.
