This week, composer/writer/publisher/musicologist, Peter Garland is visiting Oberlin from his home in Tlacotalpan, Mexico. Guest of the Contemporary Music Division and sponsored by the Richard Murphy Colloquium, Garland will offer an open rehearsal of his String Quartet #2, two lectures, and one concert. Thursday's concert in Warner Concert Hall will feature a world premiere of his String Quartet #2 "Crazy Cloud" with Tim Weiss conducting.

Garland says of the inspiration of the piece, "It was written in 1994 during a long period of travel. I had spent 43 months traveling around the world. The first movement was written in a small Buddhist temple in northwestern Japan. It's filled with poignant, emotional memories. The rest of the piece was written in Berlin, Germany in the apartment of my then-girlfriend. Again, this was a special time for me; I was very happy there."

Garland was invited to Oberlin by good friend John Luther Adams, associate professor of composition. They met at Cal Arts when both studied with composer James Tenney (who visited Oberlin for a guest residency last year).

Garland currently lives in Tlacotalpan, Mexico, located one and one-half hours south of Vera Cruz. It's a city known for its rich music and culture, and Garland descibes it a as kind of "One Hundred Years of Solitude town."
