On Sept 4, 1999, noted American composer Pauline Oliveros will send her music to the moon at the Höfe-Fest in the City of St.Pölten, Austria. The event will be witnessed by an audience of up to 2000,as the sound travels via radio signal with the assistance of Ham radio operators. Oliveros will listen for the return signal- the echo from the moon, and then play along with that echo.

Sound artist Andres Bosshard will use the open lines created by the Ham Radio Operators to create a "moon space" in which Pauline Oliveros will play her accordion while interacting with the moon.

Author and poet, IONE.

At the beginning of the performance, American author and poet IONE will speak to the moon with a Moon Text. She will then assist the audience in directing their voices to its surface to listen for the returning echoes. It has been Oliveros' intention since the inception of the idea of Echoes from the Moon that the public have an opportunity to send their own sounds to the moon and listen to their return to earth.

This will be Oliveros fourth performance of Echoes From the Moon - the first was in New Lebanon ME with Ham Radio Operator Dave Olean in 1987. Olean was one of the first Ham Radio Operators to bounce Morse Code off the moon in the 1970's. The second performance was at the Moon festival at California State University at Hayward in conjunction with the lunar eclipse of September 23,1996.

In August 1997 during the Salzburg Festival, at the ancient ampitheater known as the Domplatz, Oliveros joined with Sound Designer Andres Bosshard in a concert with the moon that received the following comments.

"I like how you use the moon as another element in the elaborate circuitry of your performance environment and yet there is the poetic image you create of one sitting at the edge of the earth, sending out sound through the emptiness of space to be reflected back off the moon, our closest planetary companion."
