Violinist Emily Fowler, a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, recently won top honors at the
Kiwanis Music Festival. Fowler was judged the most outstanding performer among 15,000 participants in the 70th annual festival at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Her prizes included a silver trophy bowl filled with pink roses, and a check for $5,000, which brought her total winnings for the twelve-day event to $10,000.

"It was good to go home and be in familiar surroundings again," says Fowler of the experience. "The Kiwanis final rounds of the competition were held in the opera house so it was fun to perform in such a big space. There were over a thousand people in the audience."

During the twelve days of competition, Fowler played violin concertos by Mozart and Sibelius, a Bach fugue, sonatas by Schumann and Ysaÿe, and the Paganini Variations by Milstein. "I like to give the audience a good show -- to play something they'll remember. When I go on-stage, I want to give an exciting and heartfelt performance," she says.

Fowler studies with Almita Vamos, professor of violin. She describes Fowler's work this way: "Emily is a very fine violinist. She has a wonderful technique and plays convincingly and very musically. She has intensity, and phrases lyrically and always with taste."
