Senior Thomas Rosenkranz Wins Three Piano Competitions and Embarks on Concert Tour

Thomas Rosenkranz, senior piano performance major from San
Diego, Calif., won the MTNA Young Chang Collegiate Piano
Competition at its third and final round, held March 21-23,
in Los Angeles. The Music Teachers National Association
award includes a $2000 prize, a Young Chang grand piano, and
national performances in the coming year.
In Los Angeles, Rosenkranz performed an hour-long program consisting of Liszt's virtuosic Fantasie and Fugue on the Theme B-A-C-H, Scriabin's mystical Piano Sonata no.5, Haydn's Piano Sonata no. 55, and a Corigliano's Piano Concerto. Rosenkranz says of his program selections, "I wanted to present a variety of styles, and the Corigliano piano concerto offered everything from violent palm clusters to lyrical passages. It's an ' in your face' sort of piece that is a blast to play."
Rosenkranz also recently was awarded the Conservatory's Arthur Dann Competition, which provides funding for concerts outside of Oberlin. Guest artist-in- residence Vera Nossina served as judge for the Dann competition.
At Oberlin, Rosenkranz studies with Robert Shannon, professor of pianoforte, who says of his work, "Thomas is an ambitious young pianist with an exciting temperament and a special affinity for contemporary music. He's growing fast and it's a pleasure to watch."
During the third week of March, Rosenkranz won first place honors at the Venetian Hall Piano Concerto Competition, held in Columbus, Ohio. In April, he will embark on a four-day concert tour in the Fairfield, Connecticut public schools where he will also present two master classes. I late-April, he will perform in a Houston, Texas concert with violinist Esther Noh, a senior from Downer's Grove, Ill.
