From The Roots of the Moment
(book with CD)

by Pauline Oliveros

Here are some of the guidelines that have sustained me in my career:

  • Find out what it is that you love to do - love it and do it.
  • let others know what you need.
  • Let people that you trust know what your goals are.
  • Make commitments to your work.
  • Practice patience and persistence.
  • Find other artists and share your ideas and resources.
  • Respect and learn from those whose values are different from yours as well as those whose values are similar.
  • Do not compromise your values.
  • Sharpen your communication skills in every way that you can.
  • Share your successes.
  • Encourage others to do their art.
  • Find ways to turn your local community on to the value of artists.
  • Above all LISTEN.
  • Listen to yourself, listen to others, listen to your art, listen to feedback about the effect of your art.
  • Trust that you are in a rewarding process.

Is There an Accordion in Your Closet?

Were you forced to take
lessons because some-
one wanted you to learn?
How come the accor-
dion is there?
Don't you think it might
be lonely?
It can breathe you
know.
Did you ever look inside
of it?
Do you know that the
air flows through a
valve that is opened
when you press a key or
a button and makes a
metal reed vibrate?
The bellows has to be
air tight for the best
results.
