"I was struck by their cohesiveness and sense of adventure; in their hands a Beethoven quartet had a zest that announced a puzzle solved." -- Chicago Reader

Simin Ganatra ('96) will return to Oberlin, along with Kathryn Lockwood, Kyu Young Kim and Brandon Vamos (yes, son of Oberlin's own Almita and Roland Vamos) - all members of the Pacifica Quartet - for a concert Thursday, 8 p.m., in Warner Concert Hall. The concert will treat local audiences to a preview of the quartet's March 9 concert at Lincoln's Center's Alice Tully Hall. The Oberlin concert is free and open to the public.

The program will include Mendelssohn's Quartet in E Minor, Op. 44, no. 2, Jennifer Higdon's Voices (1993), and Beethoven's Quartet in C Major, Op. 59. no. 3.

The Pacifica Quartet was formed in Los Angeles in 1994. In just five years, it has won an impressive array of awards, appointments and accolades, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the 1997 Nathan Wedeen Management Award, and the 1996 Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition.

The Pacifica Quartet has toured extensively throughout the U.S., from New York's Merkin Concert Hall to La Jolla's Summerfest. The quartet has participated in numerous festivals, including Aspen (where it was the fellowship quartet in 1995 and 1996), Strings in the Mountains, the Cape and Islands Festival, the Bellingham Music Festival, the Sedona Chamber Music Festival and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

The quartet lives in Chicago, where it serves as Resident Quartet at the University of Chicago and the Music Institute of Chicago. In addition, the quartet is involved in the Music Integration Project, an innovative educational outreach program that provides musical performances and teacher training in inner-city elementary schools.
