Marilyn McDonald and Monique Duphil to Collaborate in Recital of French Violin Sonatas
Saturday, February 27, 8:00 p.m. Kulas Recital Hall

By Michael Chipman

Marilyn McDonald, professor of violin, and Monique Duphil, professor of piano studies, will offer a foray into the French Romantic style when they perform three violin sonatas by French composers in a faculty recital on Saturday, February 27, at 8:00 p.m. in Kulas Recital Hall. The program will include Sonata no. 1 by Gabriel Fauré, and the violin sonatas of Debussy and Ravel.

McDonald says this recital "was a unique opportunity to perform a program of sonatas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which are quintessentially 'French.' This is perhaps easier to describe in music than in words, but it involves a special character so different from the more pervasive (and perhaps more solid) Germanic style."

She adds, "It was a double treat to work on them with my friend and colleague Monique Duphil who, because of her Paris Conservatoire training is only one generation removed from these famous figures (Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel). She had many wonderful insights into the style of the time and the composers' attitudes about their own works."

This recital is free and open to the public.
