1809 -First classical ombudsman appointed by parliament of Sweden

-Government of Finland establishes ombudsman


1953
-Government of Denmark establishes ombudsman


1962
-Governments of Norway and New Zealand establish Ombudsmen


1966
-First U.S. campus ombudsman appointed at Eastern Montana College in Billings


1967
-Hawaii and several Canadian provinces establish ombudsman -Michigan State University creates the first significant ombudsmen office in U.S.


1969
-About 20 colleges and universities have faculty members serving as ombudsmen
-Some institutions begin experimenting with student ombudsmen and ombudsman committees -Norm-setting conference held in Burlingame, California to examines aspects of the role of the newly emerging campus ombudsman

1972
-190 colleges and universities have ombudsman programs


1974
-First annual conference of the California Caucus of College and University Ombudsmen (now Ombuds) held in Asilomar, California


1982
-Corporate Ombudsman Association (now The Ombudsman Association, or TOA) established


1985
-University and College Ombudsman (now Ombuds) Association established


1996
-First Ombudsman Leadership Forum Conference held in St. Louis, Missouri


2000
