Virus-Checking and System Updates

Click to return to CIT home page

CIT uses a product that checks systems connecting to Resnet prior to providing Internet access. This is a new and very different authentication process than we've used in past years and is intended to keep the network as safe as possible from computer virus and worm attacks.

Students connecting for the first time in their residence halls are directed to a CIT web page with the Acceptable Use Policy and a section for logging in, using one's Obie username (e-mail username) and password.

The system then checks the student's computer for viruses and, if a Windows system, checks for current system updates. If viruses are found or updates are not current, the student is directed to the proper website to complete these tasks. If the student fails to correct the problems, they will be disabled from Internet access after 20 minutes and will reach the same login/authentication page every time they turn the computer on.

Once these checks have been passed, the student's computer (or other device) is authorized for connection to the network and a DHCP-generated IP address is generated. (At this point, do not logout during the authentication process.) The computer then has access to the Internet and all campus network locations.

The login/authentication page should only be seen the first time a user connects and anytime CIT suspects a virus may be making the rounds. If that occurs, CIT will require all systems to be checked again. Also, if you logout during the authentication process, you will be asked to reauthenticate when you turn your computer on the next time. Thus, once you have been cleaned and updated (if needed), and authenticated, don't log out. Then, you typically won't see the login page unless CIT requires systems to be checked again due to new viruses.

This system will also be put into place for all faculty and staff computers connecting on campus. In that way, all computers connecting to the campus network will be checked for viruses and updates.

CIT is providing an optional file for user's systems that will automatically and routinely check for viruses and Windows updates on Windows systems. This file will be on the CIT downloads web page soon. With this file installed, users will login each time they restart their computers. CIT highly recommends that users download this file and install it on their systems. It is one way you can be assured your system is clean. (CIT affirms that this product will be solely being used to scan for viruses and updates only - no other system checks will be performed via use of this file.)
