Configuring for Wireless Windows 2000

 

Before you attempt to install a wireless network card please be sure that: you have your windows full version CD (or cabs files on your hard drive), the manufacturer's driver diskette or cd that was provided by your wireless card's manufacturer and that you are in an area with wireless access (most public areas in Mudd Library, most public areas the Wilder Student Union, the King building, many areas of Conservatory of Music, the Conservatory Library, most areas of the Science Center, the Art Photodomes and some areas of the Allen Art Building Annex, the dining hall in Stevenson Hall, East hall, Wilder Bowl and Tappan Square).


part one: installing your wireless card

1. With your computer turned off, insert your wireless network card.

2. Turn the computer ON and allow it to boot normally.

part two: configuring for our wireless network

1. Go to the Start Menu, Settings then to Control Panel

2. Double click on the Network and Dial-up Connections control panel.

3. Select the Local Area Connection 2 (or which ever has the WaveLAN/IEEE PC Card in the Connect using: box.

4. Click Configure Click the Advanced tab.

5. Select the 2b WaveLan Network Name property and enter ANY for the value.

6. Click Ok.

7. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component (you may need to scroll down to find it) Click Properties.

8. Click Advanced? Select the DNS tab. Uncheck the Register this connection?s addresses in DNS.

9. Click OK.

10. Select the NWLinx IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol component. Click Properties.

11. For Frame type choose Ethernet 802.3.

12. Click OK two times. Then click Close.

part three: preparing your wireless card for ejection. (One Time)

1. Go to the Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel.

2. Double click on Add/Remove Hardware.

3. Click Next. Select Uninstall/unplug a device.

4. Click Next. Select Unplug/Eject a device. Click Next.

5. Select your WaveLan card and click Next. Click Next.

6. Be sure to click the Show Unplug/Eject icon in the taskbar checkbox. Then click finish.

7. You can now eject your wireless card.

part four: normal ejection procedure

1. Whenever your card is inserted, an icon of a card with an arrow above it will appear in the system tray (the bottom right corner of your screen)

2. Click this icon once and select Stop WaveLan/IEEE PC Card.

3. A window will appear telling you it is now safe to remove your hardware.

4. Click OK.

5. It is now safe to remove our wireless card.

Follow these steps whenever you wish to remove your wireless card.

You can also add or remove your wireless card whenever your computer is shutdown and powered off.

part five: Authenticate to complete your connection

1. Open your Web Browser, authenticate with your Obiemail username and password.
