Configuring for Wireless Windows 95 / 98*

Before you attempt to install a wireless network card please be sure that: you have your windows full version CD (or cabs files on your hard drive), the manufacturer's driver diskette or cd that was provided by your wireless card's manufacturer and that you are in an area with wireless access (most public areas in Mudd Library, most public areas the Wilder Student Union, the King building, many areas of Conservatory of Music, the Conservatory Library, most areas of the Science Center, the Art Photodomes and some areas of the Allen Art Building Annex, the dining hall in Stevenson Hall, East hall, Wilder Bowl and Tappan Square).

part one: installing your wireless card

1. With your computer turned off, insert your wireless network card.

2. Turn the computer ON and allow it to boot normally.

3. At this point most machines should auto-detect the presence of the card and ask you to begin the installation process. For further instructions skip to step 13, however, if your machine fails to auto-detect your card and boots completely without any notification please continue on to the next step.

4. To install the card manually first make sure that the card is properly seated in the slot. If it is indeed fit snugly into its place and still does not auto-detect then open the control panel (start->settings->control panel)

5. Double-click on "Add New Hardware"

6. Click "next"

7. Select the radio button labeled "no" in response to the question asking if you want windows to search for your new hardware and click "next".

8. Now select "Network adapters" from the list of hardware types and click "next".

9. At this point please insert the manufacturer's driver diskette which came with your wireless card.

10. Ignore the first listing of choices and click on "have disk".

11. Now select the proper location of the driver diskette in the "Copy manufacturer's files from" blank and click "OK".

12. When a new, smaller, listing of choices appears, select the appropriate device and click "OK" and skip to step 15.

13. The first screen that appears should notify you that the computer has detected a new piece of hardware and ask you to insert the device's cd or floppy disk. Please insert this disk at this time.

14. Once the disk has been inserted, click "next".

15. The computer will now search to locate the specific driver file which is associated with the device. When it notifies you that it has located the appropriate file click finished to begin the installation process.

16. The machine will then begin to copy the necessary files. Windows may prompt you with messages which indicates that it has not located certain files...DO NOT BE ALARMED...simply toggle between your disk drive or CD-ROM drive, whichever one contains the device drivers, and the windows diskette (either the cd or cabs files usually located at C:\windows\options\cabs\,) and click OK.

17. When the drivers have finished loading you will be asked to fill out some information in the wireless card's properties menu. Enter "ANY" in the network name field.

18. Fill in an original name in the station name blank (it is recommended that you use the same name here as you have used in the networking identification settings, but any original name will do).

19. Leave the checkbox blank and click on OK.

20. Again your machine may prompt you for your windows cd and then tell you that it cannot find certain files...STILL DO NOT BE ALARMED...simply follow the same instructions as mention in step 7.

21. Windows may now announce version conlficts...acknowledge these prompts by clicking "yes", there is NO REASON TO BE ALARMED.

22. At this point your machine should finish the booting process...if it asks you to restart please do so.
