Resnet is
the term used for Oberlin College's Residential Computer Network. Resnet

residence hall rooms, and wireless access in common areas in the residence
halls and from most public areas in Mudd Library, the Wilder Student Union,
King Hall, many areas of Conservatory of Music, the Conservatory Library,
most areas of the Science Center, the Art Photodomes, and some areas of the
Allen Art Building Annex, the dining hall in Stevenson Hall, East hall, South
Hall, the Union Street housing, Wilder Bowl and Tappan Square.
Look for these signs
for access to our wireless network! (802.11b

If you do not plan on
bringing a computer to campus, you can safely stop reading. If you plan on
having a computer in your residence hall room, you will need to read on.
Oberlin College will provide:
- a 100mb ethernet
network connection in your residence hall room
- evaluation of your computer for its ability to connect to the network
- recommendation of appropriate software or hardware (ethernet cable, card, and/or adapter, if necessary)
- installation
of ethernet card or adapter and network driver software,
if necessary
- installation
and support of basic networking utilities, including SFTP,
IMAP email client, and additional web browsers (Some college system
require certain web browsers)
- assistance with installation of virus software and Novell client
- continued support of network-related hardware and software throughout the school year
- residence hall-based
support by RCC's (RCC's or Residential Computing Coordinators are
CIT's front line student workers that can help you with your
Oberlin Resnet network and computing needs.)
The CIT webpages (http://www.oberlin.edu/cit//) are the best source
for news and information that affects you as a member of the Oberlin Resnet
community, so check them frequently.
If
you live in a residence hall (dorm) room and have brought your own

You have three options for connecting to the network from the fastest to the slowest. Do the one which suits you best.
- Fast
lane (Quick Question/Easy) :
- I have installed all the necessary hardware and software
- I have installed virus protection software and I have updated the virus protection definitions. Also, I have scanned my computer and I am free of viruses.
- Activate your connection and be on the network in a matter of minutes!
- Moderate
lane (Need Help in Person) :
- I have the ethernet hardware installed
- I need help installing the virus protection software and other software.
- This takes a little longer than doing it yourself. Your RCC will gladly connect you to the network, help you activate your connection, and install all the necessary software. Just keep in mind that due to the number of people who request this service and the limited numbers of RCCs on campus that you will have to wait several weeks.
- Get to a computer that is working; go
to: http://helpdesk.oberlin.edu/resnet.html
- Slow
lane (Need Lots of Work/Help) :
- I need an RCC to install the hardware and software.
- I have now idea if I have virus protection software on my computer or my computer was used by someone else before I received it. My computer may need some work. This service takes the longest; be prepared to wait the longest to get your computer on the network.
