Students: Need Resnet Help?

CIT has a new mechanism for requesting help with a Residential Network (Resnet) problem. You can submit an online request, any time of the day or night. Once a CIT staff member sees your request, he/she will accept it as an established work order and assign someone to assist. To submit a request, login using a valid e-mail address at: http://helpdesk.oberlin.edu/resnet.html

Connecting a Server, Wireless Access Point, Router, or Other Device

Routers, other than those used by CIT, or approved for use by CIT, are disallowed from access to the campus network. If you need to connect multiple computers to the internet, you can now use inexpensive hubs or switches, such as the Netgear FS605, the D-Link DSS-5+, the Linksys SD205 or the Hawking Technology HFS8T Wireless access points are also disallowed. The College provides wireless capability in the Common Areas of All Residence Halls and in many other locations throughout campus. Students in residence halls should first contact their RCCs. Other devices may be approved for connection to the network, depending on the type of device. Contact your RCC's at cit@oberlin.edu to ask if the device is allowed prior to connecting to the network.

Network Authentication Process

CIT implemented changes in the Summer of 2004 to the way computers access the campus network. Instead of "registering" via DHCP, students in residence halls and soon other campus locations now "authenticate", to receive an IP address and gain access. This system uses an automatic process to check for viruses and to ensure the computer has the latest Windows updates (if a Windows computer) before connecting to the campus network.
You should prepare your computer before connecting for Resnet. See this link on the CIT downloads pages: http://www.oberlin.edu/cit/downloads/resnetprep.html for step by step instructions and then configure your computer for DHCP. (The CIT Downloads site requires authentication with an ObieID and password.) full story

Important Information for All Users on Campus

If you use your computer in more than one location on campus, you will need to reboot the machine as you move between North Campus and South Campus, and all other campus buildings. This affects all users on all platforms..full story
