College Network/Resnet
Oberlin College has an extensive fiber optic network connecting 76 buildings on campus. Each building has one or more wiring closets where standard Ethernet cables are run to faceplates in every room for client connectivity. The core of the network is gigabit (1 gigabit/second) and other parts of the network are either gigabit or 100Mbs. There are some houses owned by the College where the local cable company provides connectivity. Resnet is the part of the college network that provides service to the residence halls. There are two parts to Resnet: north Resnet and south Resnet. Each have the same capabilities and functionality. Wireless is available in many areas on campus, including the Oberlin Inn. Every residence hall has at least partial wireless coverage, with some having full wireless coverage. See details by clicking on "Map of Wireless Area" below.
The network is secured by a perimeter firewall, several internal firewalls, and host-based firewalls. Virtual Private Network (VPN) services are used to ensure secure communications. Network authentication is required for all devices and a basic security assessment is performed during authentication. Users are required to change passwords periodically. Anti-virus software is used on all CIT computers/systems and spam protection is provided for everyone's e-mail.
Connecting a Server, Wireless Access Point, Router, or Other Device Routers, other than those used by CIT, or approved for use by CIT, are disallowed from access to the campus network. If you need to connect multiple computers to the internet, you can now use inexpensive hubs or switches, such as the Netgear FS605, the D-Link DSS-5+, the Linksys SD205 or the Hawking Technology HFS8T. Users' wireless access points are also disallowed. The College provides wireless capability in, at least, the common areas of all residence halls and in many other locations throughout campus. Students in residence halls should contact cit@oberlin.edu, or the TSC, for further information. Other devices may be approved for connection to the network (such as, gaming devices), depending on the type of device. Send an e-mail message to cit@oberlin.edu to ask if the device is allowed prior to connecting to the network. You may also search the CIT Wiki for information on how to get your Computer to communicate via IRC or what to do to get your XBOX or Sony PS2 on the Resnet network. See the CIT Wiki at http://citwiki.oberlin.edu Network
Authentication Process Everyone is allocated space on a central file server. This space is known as LOCKER (Location On Campus for Keeping of Electronic Resources). You can access your space by logging in with your ObieID account information at: https://stulocker.cc.oberlin.edu/NetStorage
