Disposition of Used Technology Equipment for Faculty and Staff

DispositionNavBar

Institutional Computers, older, but still usable:

The computers and other technology products provided to faculty and staff from the CIT budget are the property of CIT and remain so if the faculty/staff member leaves the institution or is issued new equipment. These computers, especially if less than four years old, often still have useful life for assignment to temporary appointments, or as secondary computers for use by student workers.

Sometimes a faculty or staff member will request to keep or purchase his or her old computer; in general, we do not allow this. In a few cases, we will allow retiring faculty/staff to keep a college-provided computer. If the computer is close to 4 years old and it’s utility on campus is diminished, then we may sell it to the departing faculty/staff member. The price is determined by the selling prices listed for similar units on websites such as eBay. Departments also may choose to purchase the equipment as a parting gift for the faculty/staff member.

Periodically, CIT holds a sale of used computers and other equipment through the Oberlin Technology Store. All members of the Oberlin College community are eligible to purchase items through these sales. Once sold, the equipment will no longer be supported or serviced by CIT. Any items remaining after the sale are often donated to non-profit organizations.

Unusable Items for Disposal:

CIT recycles computers and other technology equipment that has reached the end of its useful life. Many of the computers may be missing parts, have parts too expensive to be replaced with respect to the total value of the computer, or have parts needing to be replaced that can no longer be obtained. We donate these items to an organization that refurbishes as many of the computer units and other equipment as possible for use in third-world countries.

As well as recycling old institutional computers and equipment, CIT will recycle old, unusable technology equipment personally owned by faculty and staff. Personnel need only bring their items for disposal to the Technology Store any afternoon, Monday - Friday, 1-4:30 P.M. The faculty or staff member is responsible for ensuring that all data is wiped and is non-recoverable from the computer, and sign a form so-stating.

In addition to technology equipment, the Technology Store will accept used batteries and ink cartridges for recycling. There is a bin for this purpose placed outside the Technology Store on Level-A in Mudd Center.
