Operating System Updates |
Updated operating systems for Windows and Macintosh computers can be expected to be forthcoming at various times during any academic year. CIT will update faculty and staff desktop computers on an as-needed basis, and as the computer hardware allows. Since the normal replacement cycle of computers usually allows for a timely update to the latest operating system, and since resources are limited, CIT will not routinely upgrade all faculty and staff College-owned desktop and laptop computers at the same time. Upgrades will be provided on a case-by-case basis, first-come-first-served, if needed for work purposes. Also, we must take into account the hardware capabilities of the computer to support the new operating system (OS). CIT will not normally upgrade a computer outside of its normal replacement cycle just to support a newly released operating system. Faculty and staff who believe they need the latest OS upgrade for work purposes should contact the Help Desk at x58197 or at cit@oberlin.edu to get a work order created to get this accomplished. In general, CIT does not allow any user to perform their own operating system upgrade on a College-owned computer. CIT has standard practices in place that lead to easier administration of College-owned systems. We also will need to reinstall all standard software applications and perform necessary system clean-up (providing security patches and upgrades, etc.). |
