OCMail will provide:

  • OCMailLoginPgGigabytes of e-mail storage
As of 02 July, it was at 6.88 GB per user account. Quota should not be a problem for you any longer!

  • Much better spam control!
Google has one of the best spam blockers in the business. Spam is purged every 30 days. There is also built-in virus checking, with checking of documents even before a user downloads any message.
(NOTE: Before we completely transition all users from the existing mail server, mail will continue to go to the Oberlin mail server first, before going to Google. Thus, the processing of spam will first be accomplished at the Oberlin end. The full benefit of using Google's spam system will, therefore, not be accomplished until the transition of all accounts has been completed and the old mail server has been removed from service.)

  • Your same e-mail address, using Oberlin's domain
Thus, your e-mail address will remain in the form firstname.lastname@oberlin.edu. Your actual login with OCMail will be in the form ObieID username@oberlin.edu.

  • Access to your e-mail from anywhere, via a browser
You will still be able to use an e-mail client program (such as Thunderbird or OSX Mail), but you will also be able to access your e-mail from anywhere, via a web browser. You can also access your e-mail with a mobile device, such as a Palm or iTouch.

OCApps:

OCAppsStartPageInitially, we will work to get everyone's e-mail account moved to the new OCMail system. Once a large portion of that transition has occurred, we will turn on OCApps. We expect to turn on the following functions at that time.

  • OCApps will provide you with your own personalized Start Page, with links to oncampus.oberlin.edu, the CIT Wiki, and the CIT website.

  • Google Calendar: You'll be able to schedule meetings, create events, and share calendars with others.

  • Google Docs: This will allow you to create and share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online.

  • Instant messaging from within your mailbox.
