The Systems group consists of two systems administrators.
They are responsible for the systems administration of all the campus-wide servers, including the Banner server, the email server, the Meeting Maker server, etc.
This group manages and provides technical support for both hardware and systems software for the computer platforms upon which are processed the business and the academic automated information systems of Oberlin College. Included among these information systems are those which are mission-critical to the business process of the institution as well as those which are critical to the support of academic departments and students.
They are directly responsible for a diverse set of hardware systems, including the Administrative Computing Servers (Banner), Web Servers, the Mail Server, and other misc. systems running primarily the UNIX operating systems (Sun Solaris mainly).
This group must insure that all of these computer systems are running smoothly, that they are protected against security break-ins, and that new versions of system software and applications software are installed at appropriate times.
They manage and provide technical support for the peripheral equipment which is part of these systems, including a variety of tape systems and printers.
It is this group who has the ultimate responsibility to ensure that these various systems and their peripheral equipment are operational and that they are operating at high efficiency. When problems are encountered with the hardware, the systems software, or the peripheral equipment, the Systems group make the determination as to the quickest and most effective means necessary to remedy the problems and place the systems and equipment back into operation.
Through capacity monitoring and planning, it is the Systems group who makes the determination and recommendation for the replacement and/or upgrade of these systems. This capacity planning and decision-making is most important to the CIT's ability to provide adequate computing platforms for the operation of the College's automated information systems.
