Winter Term Projects

CIT uses the Winter Term time to schedule many maintenance and upgrade activities. The following projects took place during Winter Term, or just prior:

IMPACT TO USERS

IMSP shut down; Mulberry no longer supported 23 Dec 2006 IMSP is a protocol no longer supported on our mail server. Thus, it is being shut off. Mulberry users will no longer be able to use the multi-user version, and will not have access to address books on the server. Mulberry users have been encouraged to switch to a different email program (Thunderbird or OSX Mail, and Netscape Mail for Mac OS 9 users). See article below for more details.
SAN Maintenance 28 Dec 2006 All services will be unavailable for approximately 3 hours. See article above for details.
Clean Access product installed for campus network 28 Dec 2006 This is the first step toward requiring network authentication for all computers, prior to accessing the campus network, as a means of enhancing network security. This product has been in place for some time for Resnet and will now be installed for the campus. The action on this date will involve installation of necessary equipment. Actual authentication will be required in March or April (users will be notified of the new process prior to implementation). No impact to the users is expected on 28 Dec.
Blackboard upgrade 04 Jan 2006 Blackboard unavailable that day.
Install Messaging Server hotfix (patch) 05 Jan 2006 Email will be down at 12 P.M. (noon) for approximately 15 minutes to install this required hotfix.
Emptying of Email Trash Folders 09 Jan 2006 Starting on this date, email messages in users' Trash folders, dated 10 days prior to the current date, will be deleted and removed from the server, thus no longer be retrievable. See details above.
Upgrade to server spam-filtering application 11 Jan 2006 More spam will be caught at the filter, prior to reaching users' inboxes.
Adding anti-virus filter application to email server 17 Jan 2006 Intent is to catch viruses/worms as they hit the email server. Users should receive less viruses/worms via email.
Running MeetingMaker database repair function. 19 Jan 2006 Meeting Maker will be down during this process.
Wireless capability added to some common areas of residence halls Winter Term and Spring Semester Wireless will be added to several common areas in residence halls throughout campus. See article below for details. Updated 01/25/06.
Install new Central Ticket Office application TBD No impact to users. Working with Theater & Dance Dept. to upgrade to a new ticketing application.
Upgrade Client Services server - hardware and operating system TBD No impact to users. Internal project.
Install SciFinder Scholar for OS X in required Mac labs; upgrade operating systems to remove Classic (no longer required) During Winter Term Users in Sci Library Lab and Mac/Chem lab in Science Center will have latest version of SciFinder Scholar.
Upgrade to SPSS v. 14 Throughout Winter Term All Windows lab computers will be upgraded to the latest version of SPSS, v.14.
Upgrade Service Building main server and backup server to new hardware and new operating systems TBD Some downtime will be scheduled to install the new main server. Date and time TBD. Impacts clients in the Service Building.
Add a GroupID for graduated students TBD Result will be that messages can be sent to all currently enrolled students without going to students who have already graduated.
Deliveries of new computers. Throughout Winter Term Delivery and installation of new computers will be made to faculty and staff previously scheduled to receive them. (This is an ongoing process.)
Asset Management application installation TDB Install Asset Tracking application that is add-on module to CIT's work order tracking system. Will provide enhanced inventory of computers on the campus network.

More Wireless Capability Added to Residence Halls

UPDATE 01/25/06: During Winter Term, we began adding wireless capability to the residence hall common areas listed below. We expect to have Barnard, Bailey, Langston, Zechiel and Barrows completed by the end of January, with the rest of North Campus done by the end of Februar y. We hope to complete South Campus residence halls by the end of Spring Break.
