E-Mail Delays Occuring

Article Posted: 11-19-2006

We have been experiencing delays in e-mail transmission, wherein people send messages to other Oberlin College people and the recipients don't receive the messages in a timely manner. This appears to be due to the spam filtering product, which has become overloaded with the huge amount of incoming mail. We are routinely receiving over a quarter of a million messages each day, which first must go through the spam filter, since approximately 90% of these messages are, in fact, spam. The spam filter cannot process messages quickly enough, so some get delayed until the filter can process the messages. The messages eventually get delivered, but delays can cause this to take hours. We have a high priority case open with our support vendor and hope to have resolution for this problem as quickly as possible.
