Cable Co-op Changes Lead to E-Mail Account Changes for Oberlin College Personnel |

The Cable Co-op in Oberlin is in the process of migrating to a new network address structure. This change provides a good opportunity for CIT to enhance security for Oberlin College's network/e-mail access. In the past, Cable Co-op users who were also Oberlin College personnel were provided network (IP) addresses that gave them access to Oberlin College resources as if they were on campus. Now that those addresses are changing, due to the Cable Co-op changes, CIT is eliminating this process and moving to a more secure method that will also be less tied to future changes at the Co-op. Oberlin College personnel who connect from home using the Cable Co-op will need to set up their e-mail clients to use SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) authentication. With this setting, users will set up their e-mail client programs (Thunderbird, OSX Mail, Outlook, etc.) to use the Oberlin College mail server to send and receive mail. To do this, users will need to be authenticated on the e-mail system using their e-mail account usernames and passwords. Instructions for setting this up are online at: http://www.oberlin.edu/cit/email/smtp/ This ONLY applies to college personnel who use the Cable Co-op from home. For further assistance, please contact the CIT Help Desk at x58197, or cit@oberlin.edu.
