Listserv Usage
Policy
Prior to proceeding
to the Listserv Request Form (below), please read this Listserv usage
policy. Acceptance of this policy is presumed by your submission of
the completed request form. If you do not agree to the policy stated
below, do not submit the completed form. If you have questions about
this Policy, please send an e-mail message to: client.services@oberlin.edu.
- All lists must
be owned or sponsored by an Oberlin College faculty or staff member.
By agreeing to own a Listserv list, the owner assumes responsibility
for day-to-day monitoring and operation of the list. (Sponsors who
are not list owners shall ensure that the actual list owner complies
with the stated policy.) It is the owner's responsibility to ensure
the list continues to run smoothly, College policies are adhered to,
and the stated objective(s) of the list are followed. The owner shall
be the point-of-contact for subscribers when problems or questions
arise.
- Students
who wish to have a Listserv list must have a faculty or staff
member sponsor the list (without exception). Chartered student organizations may apply for listerv accounts, providing there is a designated faculty/staff sponsor. Student organizations in the process of receiving a charter, but not yet chartered, and other non-chartered organizations, are not eligible for a listserv.
- In most cases,
list members must consent to being on a Listserv list. List owners
must comply immediately to requests from subscribers to be removed
from lists. Class instructors or Oberlin College offices may use Listserv
lists of students in a class, students of a particular major, staff
in a particular department, etc. In cases such as these, a request
to be removed from a Listserv list need not be honored by the list
owner.
- Lists may not
attempt to address the entire Oberlin College community, nor any other
large contingent of individuals for which the list owner does not
have administrative responsibility. No mass unsolicited mailings
are allowed.
- Addresses from
Listserv lists may not be compiled, collected, or used for any purpose
other than the original intended purpose of the Listserv.
- Subscribers
agree to hold Oberlin College, the Center for Information Technology,
and list owners harmless for any opinions expressed on a Listserv
mailing list. Opinions so stated do not necessarily reflect the opinions
of Oberlin College, the Center for Information Technology, or the
list owners.
- List owners
are requested to state the specific purpose of their list in the "Info
File Content" section of the Listserv Request Form.
- Listserv owners
shall provide "end dates" for their list, i.e., date when
the list can be discontinued. Additionally, Listserv owners will receive
a e-mail notification prior to Listserv removal. Owners must reply
to this message prior to the renewal date specified, or their list
will be removed from the system.
- Listserv owners
who depart the College and desire that the list continues, must turn
over responsibility for that list to a new list owner who consents
to being said list owner, and must so notify listmaster@oberlin.edu.
If no notification is received by the CIT listmaster, the list will
be removed at the same time as list owner's other Oberlin accounts.
