Other Services

The Center for Information Technology tries to be as helpful as possible. Please understand, though, that resources are limited.

Advice on what computer or peripheral equipment to purchase:

The Tecnology Store staff, both regular staff and student staff, have a wealth of information and expertise on computer systems, peripheral equipment, and other technology items. They can provide you with advice and guide you through the decision process, if desired. The Store, located Level A in Mudd Center, also has many computers and other items on display for you to view and purchase. The Store is open Monday-Friday, 1-4:30 P.M.

Backups of data:

College-owned computers: CIT conducts backups of office computers for many departments on campus, mainly administrative departments. Please check with your department to learn if your computer is in this centralized backup process. Other personnel may request backup devices (i.e., exteranl hard drives, DVD-Rs, CD-RWs, flash drives, etc.) to backup data themselves.

Personal computers: CIT cannot provide backups of data on personal computers, due to limited resources. Prior to having your computer worked on for any reason, you should make every attempt to acquire a backup of your data. CIT staff may provide advice on obtaining a backup

NOTE: CIT greatly encourages backing up one's important data and files. New Macintosh computers (OSX 10.5) provide a product known as Time Machine for backing up one's data. Windows computers with the Vista operating system also provide a backup capability. For college-owned computers, CIT will provide the external hard drives, upon request by the user, to support these backup systems.

Recovery of data from inoperable hard drives:

For College-owned computers, if the computer hard drive crashes before data can be recovered, CIT will make every attempt to recover the data. If this is not possible and you strongly desire the recovery of your data, CIT can recommend external companies that may be able to recover the data for a fee. This cost must be covered by your department.

Assistance with Personal Computers:

Faculty and Staff: If you require assistance for a personal computer that was not purchased through the Oberlin College Technology Store or is not an Apple or HP computer under warranty, you may find a student willing to provide assistance on his or her own time, for a fee, by writing to cit@oberlin.edu, delineating the details of your request.

Other Services:

When in doubt, please contact the Help Desk at x58197 or at cit@oberlin.edu. We will make every effort to provide assistance!
