Laptop Loaner Policy

Procedure and Policies for Borrowing and Use of Laptop Computers

The Computing Center has several laptop computers available for loan to faculty and staff members according to the guidelines below. They are not available for loan to students. The computers are intended for College-related work only. The number and configuration of these computers may vary, but they are designed primarily for conference and research trips away from campus, and not for teaching or research needs in the classroom or lab. Computers for classroom presentation may be available from the OCTET office. Call Albert Borroni, extension 8345 for more information..

To accommodate the numerous requests and to ensure high availability, the maximum loan period is two weeks. The computer must be returned promptly at the end of the loan period. You will lose borrowing privileges if equipment is not returned promptly. Due to unpredictable conditions such as repair, or delayed return, the Computing Center cannot guarantee that a laptop will be available for any specific scheduled loan. These are conditions that cannot be controlled.

Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and are made by calling ext. 8290. The borrower and/or the borrower's department will be responsible for any damage or loss to the computer while it is on loan.

Any information (files) that the borrower creates and wants to keep should be transferred to his/her personal machine (or personal diskette, etc.) before the loaner unit is returned to the Center. The Center will attempt to restore the unitŐs hard disk each time it is returned so that the next borrower will have a standard setup, but time pressures may not always permit this. The Computing Center is NOT responsible for any loss of personal data that that is left on a laptop after its return.

The computers have a standard set of productivity software installed, including word processing and a spreadsheet program. Some machines may also be configured for internet access either via direct network connection or modem dial in. However, while we try to maintain a standard set of features on each unit, we cannot guarantee that all the features you need will be on the specific unit that is available to you, nor can we install special software. It is important for you to specify your needs when you call to reserve one of these computers; we will attempt to make the right one available for you.

Borrowers must sign a form signifying that they have read and understand these policies, and that they will return the unit promptly by the end of the borrowing period.

If you have any questions about these guidelines, please call ext. 8290.
