User maintenance

General user maintenance:

Keyboard: Clean the keyboard with an soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. Clean keytops, and between keys. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean debris from between keys. Be careful if you use canned air to clean keyboard as the compressed air can force debris under the keys.

Floppy Drives: Clean the floppy drive periodically with a floppy drive cleaner such as 3M cleaning kits.. This usually consists of a cleaning diskette to which you add a few drops of the cleaning fluid, inserting the diskette in the drive and activating the drive. According to Apple, the Apple SuperDrive is particularly susceptable to dust. The 1.44MB format needs more precise read/write head positioning and is less tolerant of dirt. You may see more failures in that format than with the 800K or 400K formats.

Mouse: To clean your mouse, turn the mouse on its back (be sure not to let it wriggle away). Remove the sphere over the ball. Remove the ball (you can turn it over and burp it and the ball will eject). Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the dirt from the three small wheels. You may need to loosen some of the dirt with your fingernail and then rub with the cotton swab. Wash the rubber ball with soap and warm water to remove any oil and dirt that has collected. Do not use alcohol on the ball as it will damage the rubber. Now, put the mouse back together and it will be ready to go!

Desktop Monitors: Clean the monitor with a non-ammonia cleaner such as a staticide -- do not spray anything directly on the monitor. Spray your cloth with cleaner, then wipe any grime or fingerprints from the screen. Never use anything on the monitor that contains an abrasive.

Laptop Monitors: Clean the keyboard with an soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. Clean keytops, and between keys. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean debris from between keys. Be careful if you use canned air to clean keyboard as the compressed air can force debris under the keys.

To clean an LCD screen, first, turn the computer off. Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only and wipe the screen. Do no spray liquid directly on the screen.

You may also use a mild glass cleaner that contains neither alcohol nor ammonia, or any type of abrasive.

There are many commercial products available that will work without damaging the plastics, such as a staticide, or a product tested by Apple called Klear Screen made by Meridrew Enterprises.
