Getting Connected Starting in the Fall 2003, all students and other personnel in residence halls desiring to connect to the campus network, had to first be authenticated on the network. This process is now (Fall 2006) being extended to all faculty and staff computers connecting to the network on campus as a vital step in our plans to enhance the security and safety of computer systems attached to the Oberlin College computer network. The authentication process uses a Network Admission Control (NAC) product that checks each users' computer system for necessary updates (particularly, Windows computers) and virus protection. Users whose computers are found to be lacking these necessary security and safety aspects, or found to have safety or security problems (viruses, spyware, misconfigurations, etc.) will be directed to a web page describing the steps to be followed. This authentication process is to be required for both wired and wirless systems.
