Recycle old computers and other technology equipment via a certified recycling company, including college-owned equipment and personal equipment (all computers must be wiped clean prior to bringing to CIT for disposal) |
Old equipment gets refurbished to the greatest extent possible and reused by charitable organizations or sent for use in developing countries. Equipment that cannot be reused is recycled in the most environmentally-safe way. |
Purchase "Energy Star" compliant computers and equipment, to the greatest extent possible |
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. In 1992 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Computers and monitors were the first labeled products. The ENERGY STAR label is now on over 50 product categories including major appliances, office equipment, lighting, and home electronics. |
Provide flat-panel LCD monitors or LED-backlit monitors |
Flat panel LCD monitors are extremely economical when it comes to power consumption. Their consumption is in the region of 25 -50 watts compared to CRTs, which consume approximately 60-80 watts for a 15 inch model to almost 70 to 150 for 17 and 19 inch models.
Apple computers and devices are moving to LED-backlit monitors. These monitors do not contain any mercury. MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs, and iPods already use LEDs and other monitors are now moving in this direction. |

Use paper that is 100% recyclable and 100% Sustainable Forestry Initiative® certified |
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI), which is a program based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. |
| Provide notices on all CIT-maintained lab computers on how to print duplex. |
Duplex printing uses less paper, so CIT greatly encourages its use. We don't make it the "default" for printing from lab computers for the following reasons: duplex printing costs more and, if someone only needed a single sheet and didn't change to single-sheet mode, that person will use more of their print quota; duplex printing has a tendency to cause more issues for printers over long-term use, such as jamming, leading to increased maintenance and repair costs. |
