oncampus.oberlin.edu (Blackboard)

oncampus.oberlin.edu provides access to a website tailored for you. It contains information relevant to the whole college community and information specific to you - your courses, events of interest, etc. This website uses Blackboard™ as the underlying software application.

CIT began using the Blackboard™ (Bb) Course Management System (CMS) in 1999 as a pilot project with a few faculty members, supporting a handful of courses. Since that time, the number of users and Oberlin courses supported by Blackboard has grown phenomenally. Now, faculty routinely use the system to provide course materials for students to access anytime via the web and a Bb account, provide interactive study guides, develop discussion boards, implement online quizzes, send e-mail to students in courses, and so on.

The Blackboard product has expanded in recent years from a basic Course Management System (CMS) to the Blackboard Academic Suite™, combining a Learning System (previously the CMS), Community System, and Content System. During the summer of 2006, CIT began working with Blackboard to implement the Learning System and Community System. This system is hosted at the vendor's facility, allowing us the ability to provide the capabilities of the enhanced system with the same limited personnel resources.

The Learning System provides enhanced capabilities in Instructional Support (course management, syllabus builder, content authoring, teaching and learning tools, learning units), Communication (discussion board, group projects, virtual classroom/collaboration tool), and Assessment (assessments and surveys, assignments, gradebook, reporting and performance dashboard).

The Community System fits well with the Oberlin College Strategic Plan by providing an online mechanism to enhance communication across campus. This system provides community-building tools, portal web services, role-based information delivery (with roles such as faculty, staff, and student), and wireless/PDA access to online information (announcements, calendars, etc.).

The use of Blackboard, currently known as OnCampus, will be advanced during the Fall of 2007 for use by all Oberlin College personnel. it will serve as a portal to all manner of Oberlin College information and communication mechanisms.

See details on Blackboard on the OCTET website.

Please direct any questions about Blackboard usage to octet@oberlin.edu.
