PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN DETAIL. If you have questions, please send an e-mail to: cit@oberlin.edu

ObieID Self Service provides a process whereby you can change your ObieID password online, and can reset your password online, if needed - i.e., you've forgotten your password or the password expired. Your ObieID is your main Oberlin College computer account, used to gain access to multiple network/computer resources and services: e-mail, web account, network authentication, wireless access. network resources (your personal file server space), Windows computers in offices and labs, Mac lab computers (coming soon), and Blackboard: oncampus.oberlin.edu. (Note: Banner and PRESTO accounts are accessed using separate, unique Banner and PRESTO usernames and passwords.)

ALL OBERLIN COLLEGE NETWORK (faculty and staff, as well as students) users must authenticate before being able to use the network. This requires opening a web browser and entering one's ObieID account username and password. (See further details online.)

Password Changing/Resetting:

  • In order to reset your password (when it has expired or been forgotten) on your own, using the online process, you must FIRST set up the answers to password-recovery questions so the system will be able to verify your identity. Before going any further, visit the ObieID Self Service website to set up your questions. (First-time, non-student users, see note below.) If you do not accomplish this, and you forget your password or your password expires, you will not be able to reset your password by yourself, and you will then need to visit the CIT Help Desk in person (Mudd 005) with your physical Oberlin ID card.

NOTE: If you are a first-time, non-student, ObieID user - that is, a faculty or staff member who has not yet used his/her account - the account username and password will initially only allow you to log in to the ObieID Self Service system. Once there, you must change your password in order to then set up own password recovery questions.

  • When your password is due to expire, you will receive an e-mail message ten days prior. The message will include a link to the ObieID Self Service website. You will then click on Change Existing Password and make the necessary change to a new password. See Password Information below on selecting a proper password.
  • If you have forgotten your password, or your password has already expired, go to the ObieID Self Service website and click on Reset Forgotten Password. You will then need to answer the three Password Recovery questions you initially set up.

Password Information:

  • Passwords expire every 122 days. You will receive an e-mail notice 10 days prior to expiration and each subsequent day until the password expires.
  • You will not be able to reuse the last two passwords you have used.
  • Passwords will need to be at least 6 characters in length and at least one character must be alphabetic and at least one must be numeric.

Password Recovery Questions:

  • The responses that you provide are not case sensitive.
  • Be sure to select questions for which you will remember the answers, yet others will be unable to guess.

Logging Out:

  • Be sure to log out of the ObieID Self Service website when done. Also, make sure you close the browser, or others may still have access to your account information.

Error Messages:

Possible error messages when entering passwords: The product we use for Self-Service password changing is a commercial off-the-shelf product, which allows little customization. The error messages (and grammar/spelling) are set and cannot be modified by Oberlin College staff.
