ObieID

Your ObieID is your main account at Oberlin College. This one account - and one password - gives you access many resources (more details below), including your e-mail, Novell Netware resources (LOCKER space - personal storage space on a centralized server), Network Authentication, access to office and lab computers, and access to oncampus.oberlin.edu (your Blackboard account). In addition, if you request a web account, your ObieID will also provide access to that account. (Note: group web accounts are not accessed using your ObieID. A separate account is provided for access to group accounts.)

Your ObieID will normally follow the form: first initial of first name, followed by first seven characters of last name. Thus, if your name is Martha Washington, your ObieID will be mwashing. If there happen to be two Martha Washingtons on campus, the first letter of the middle name will follow the first letter of the first name, with letters of the last name included to equal a total of 8 characters. Thus, Martha Ann Washington and Martha Sue Washington would be assigned mawashin and mswashin, respectively. You will be required to change your ObieID password every 122 days.

Once you have been assigned your ObieID, you will need to then go to the ObieID Self Service web page and set up your password-recovery questions. These questions will allow you to gain access, should you ever forget your password, or should you allow your account to expire.

If you are new to Oberlin and have just received your account information, your password will allow you to access the ObieID Self Service web page only. You will then need to change your password in order to set up your password recovery questions and have access to your assigned network resources.

If you have already been using your Oberlin account and just need to set up your password recovery questions, your ObieID will allow you to do so directly, without having to first change your password.

Click here or on the Oberlin Self Service link above to read more about ObieID Self Service and Password-Changing.

E-mail is provided to all Oberlin College personnel - faculty, staff, and students. Students are allocated 50 MB of space on the e-mail server, and faculty and staff each receive 100 MB. All e-mail is processed through a spam filter prior to delivery in in-boxes. You can read more about e-mail on campus by clicking on the E-mail link at the left.

Novell Netware resources provide you with access to the following:

  • StuLOCKER or StaffLOCKER - personal file storage space on a central server
  • other file server resources, such as ClassLOCKER space - space on a file server used by a faculty or staff member for access by several people at one time
  • the login capability on Windows lab computers, and Windows office computers for faculty and staff

Network Authentication: Your ObieID is also the account used to authenticate to the network every 28 days. Every 28 days, you will be required to open a web browser and enter your ObieID acount name and password. This will then allow you to fully access the Internet and other network resources. Complete details about Network Authentication can be found online.

Blackboard (oncampus.oberlin.edu) is the communication tool used by Oberlin College. It functions as both a Course Management System and a Community Suite, providing customized displays of information based on your roles and/or courses attending here at Oberlin College. You can read more about it by clicking on the Blackboard link at the left.
