Oberlin Shansi Two-Year Fellowships in Asia

Oberlin Shansi believes in the power of people to bring diverse worlds together. Each fall, as it has done for more than 100 years, Oberlin Shansi offers two-year fellowships to current Oberlin College seniors and to those who have graduated from Oberlin in the past three years. These fellowships provide challenging and rewarding opportunities at Shansi partner institutions in China, India, Indonesia and Japan. Oberlin Shansi seeks individuals interested in intercultural learning and sharing.

Shansi’s goal is to provide opportunities for fellowship recipients to experience as broadly as possible contemporary life in Asia while assisting our partner institutions. Within a limited time Shansi Fellows are expected to develop a comprehension of the host culture, its people and language. Shansi Fellows also provide opportunities for people associated with our partners to engage in meaningful ways with young Americans so that they may learn about the culture and people of the United States. Balancing these demands requires a full-time commitment, individual initiative, and determination. The rewards are often rich and life changing.

Fellows are selected after a careful review of a written application and an intensive interview. They must demonstrate strong personal qualities, among them flexibility, responsibility, an ability to work with others, energy and intelligence.

They have real jobs and responsibilities that ground their experiences abroad in reality. They have to encounter and work with non-Americans to achieve a common goal. The fact of having a job means that the experience of the Fellows goes beyond casual contact and has substance.

Shansi Fellows receive training during an intensive January Winter Term orientation program and in some cases during an intensive summer language program prior to departure. Study of the host country language(s) is a fundamental part of this program and we insist that participants at least commence their language work during the summer prior to departure and continue throughout their terms. Ability to communicate in the language is a point which distinguishes Shansi fellows from other young teachers and travelers.

India: The American College (currently suspended), Lady Doak College, and Jagori
Indonesia: Gadjah Mada University (UGM) & Syiah Kuala University (UnSyiah)
Japan: J.F. Oberlin University
China: Shanxi Agricultural University (SAU), Yunnan University, and Beijing Normal University

They have real jobs and responsibilities that ground their experiences abroad in reality. They have to encounter and work with non-American teachers to achieve a common goal. Having a job means that the experience of the fellows goes beyond casual contact and has substance.

Inevitably that substance has cultural content and the learning goes both ways. At the same time the fellows are making real contributions to the educational process, where learning English is a desired goal. Their youth and energy serve as an inducement for their students to take the study of English more seriously and also to have fun with it.

Shansi fellows receive training in teaching English as a foreign language during a Winter Term orientation program and, in some cases, during an intensive summer training program prior to departure.
