About the Oberlin College Democrats

The OC Dems are dedicated to increasing Obies' levels of participation in local, state, and national Democratic politics. We work toward this goal by:
- Registering Obies to Vote - Each fall, the Dems work to register incoming freshman and re-register returning students - in 2004, we helped register over 2,100 students on campus.
- Supporting Get-Out-The-Vote Efforts on Election Day - In addition to extensive on-campus GOTV efforts, each year, the Dems staff an Election Day Voter Information table - an Obie's one-stop shop for questions or concerns about voting in Oberlin. In November 2004, Oberlin College had an almost 100% voter turnout rate.
- Volunteering on Local, State, and National Campaigns - The Dems serve as a resource for Obies who want to become involved in politics at all levels of government. In 2004, we volunteered with John Kerry for President, Americans Coming Together, VoteMob, and other progressive organizations at both the state and national levels. In 2006, we worked with America Votes to support the successful campaigns of Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate and Sue Morano for state senate.
- Sponsoring Speakers on Campus - The Dems have brought prominent local, state, and national Democrats to address the campus, such as former Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich in 2004, who spoke before a standing-room only crowd in Finney Chapel, and former mayor of Cincinnati Jerry Springer in 2006, who spoke before a standing-room only crowd in West Lecture Hall. We've also sponsored forums with such notable speakers as Andre Heinz, Ruy Texeira, and Lee Fisher.
- Hosting On-Campus Events - In 2004, we resurrected an Oberlin tradition dating back to the Civil War: the Oberlin mock presidential debate. Since 2004, we have hosted an annual conference for college Democrats from across Ohio, featuring leadership seminars and workshops.
- Supporting Other Progressive Activities - Supporting Oberlin unions, working with local organizations, or even driving to Oklahoma to canvas for Democrats in need, the Oberlin College Democrats work to promote Democrats and progressive politics wherever possible.
