Anti-Sodhexo Marriott Campaign Meeting with College

Meeting with YB (Yeworkwha Belachew) of Residential Life and Services and students from Anti-Sodhexo Marriott Campaign 3/10/00

Quotes from YB:
"I am going to support you all the way."
"I want to make sure another monster doesn't come back there."

GENERAL CDS INFO:
-CDS was never independently owned to her knowledge. The name of the
corporation that managed it just changed over the years.
-Having outside managers for CDS may actually be more costly than
self-managing.
-No information about the contract between CDS and Marriott is available to
the students.
-College pays Marriott a flat fee for management.
- Peter Goldsmith is in charge of the entire ResLife dept.
- Students are not as interested as they used to be in working in CDS, so
the CDS looks to temp. agencies for labor.
- The college will probably argue that if they hired all permanent
laborers, there will not be enough work for everyone, because it is mostly
part-time work.
- Marriott did not loan $ to build Stevenson.
- The college has asked restuarants in the past to sell food in CDS, but
the restaurants refused.
- Probably next year "Kchunk Money" will be used, whereby students' family
can send money to be deposited in an account that can only be used for
certain things. This will not be part of your tuition. These things will
include being able to use your id. in restauants and bookstores. There is
a similar program at Wooster

LOCAL ORGANIC FOODS SPECIFIC:
- If a local organic food program is established, there should be a student
moniter to ensure that the program is maintained.
- The college feeds 600-800 people a day in the summer. (This is important
to share with potential local farmers because this will show what kind of
market they might have year in the prolific summer monthes.)

TACTICAL STRATEGIES:
- In late 70s, early 80s, there was a campaign to kick Coca Cola out of
Oberlin because of its investment in South Africa. Find out how they did it.
- Petitions are good in order to make this a community issue. It also
leaves a legacy, documentation, and history.
- It is reccommended that we draft to sets of demands - one directly
involving Marriot, another involving the college.
- We should demand a letter of guarantee from the college for a time line
of when this needs to happen.
- We can expect a response from ResLife to our demands in 2 weeks. But all
the demands cannot be answered at one time. A series of meetings need to
be arranged to address all the demands.
- We want ongoing meetings until we can resolve these issues.
