204. Interpretation of Art Song 1 hour First and Second Semester. Individual coaching sessions for singer/accompanist duos on musical style, interpretation, ensemble, languages, presentation. Students who begin coaching first semester for a second semester recital will receive a deferred grade after completion of the recital. Piano majors may substitute this course for one of the required keyboard accompanying credits. Note: Accompanists may repeat the course for credit once. Consent of instructor required. Guided Piano Pedagogy Project 1 hour First and Second Semester. An independent study course for prospective and declared piano pedagogy minors. General introduction for pianists to pedagogical principles, teaching repertoire, and learning materials and technology, with focus on teaching intermediate level students. Students will engage in lecture-discussions, critically respond to assigned readings, examine current teaching materials, and contribute regularly to a web-based discussion group. A one-semester introduction to the teaching of beginning piano and musicianship skills to young students in group and private settings. Improvisation at the Organ 2 hours Next offered 2004-2005. 230. The Teaching of Singing 3 hours Second Semester. The first part of the course is designed as an introduction to aspects of physiology, acoustics, and phonetics of the singing instrument, relating them directly to comparative vocal techniques and to the materials of teaching. It presents practical application of systematic vocal technique to the teaching of singing. The Otto B. Schoepfle Vocal Arts Center will be heavily relied upon as a resource for the course. A one-semester course examining various aspects of teaching of all levels of all of the instruments of the woodwind family. This course will include master classes with discussion sessions following. Some writing will be involved. We will have discussions on subjects concerning teaching etiquette, breathing, psychology, etc. The students will give lessons to students invited to the class. A one-semester course examining the various teaching techniques and methods for beginning through college level flutists. The course will include lectures and teaching observed by the class to be followed by discussion sessions. Participants will also teach supervised private lessons on a pay basis. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 6. Open to flute performance majors. Ms. Chastain 235. Percussion Instruments 1 hour Second Semester. Primarily for music education majors. Designed to give students knowledge of the pedagogy of percussion instruments, materials and method books, and methods for building percussion sections of school ensembles. A workshop for composition majors only, concentrating on the problems of writing for percussion instruments and including studies of the characteristics and performance problems of all percussion instruments, notational systems, set-up problems, and orchestrational possibilities. A course in the technique and practice of realizing continuo parts in the music of the Baroque. Prerequisites: MUTH 132 and APST 214. Enrollment Limit: 5. Designed primarily for harpsichord, organ, piano, and music history majors. Ms. Crawford 241. Introduction to Historical Keyboard Instruments for Pianists 2 hours First Semester. A team-taught, hands-on introduction to the fortepiano, harpsichord, and organ. The semester will be divided into four segments. During each of the first three segments (one per instrument) students will meet in groups of three or four, twice a week. Students will be expected to prepare excerpts from a variety of repertory. Related readings will also be assigned. For the fourth segment, each student will concentrate on one of the instruments, selecting a short work for in-class performance at the end of the semester. During this final segment, private lessons with the appropriate faculty member will replace the class meetings. Prerequisite: MHST 215 (first semester of Keyboard Literature). Designed for conservatory students in any major, a course stressing baton technique and score preparation. An opportunity for students who have completed Intermediate Piano Pedagogy (APST 210) to further develop their teaching skills. Required portfolios will include development of syllabi for individual students, self-critiques of video-taped lessons, written lesson reports, and assessments of student progress. 601. Performance Projects (Artist Diploma) 1 hour First and Second Semester. Projects may include accompanying of recitals or performing solo recitals (including preparation of the two required solo recitals), and other public performance as soloist, arranged in consultation with the major teacher. Some of the projects are to be prepared independently by the student. Projects are evaluated each semester by members of the major department to arrive at a course grade. A performance class designed around a body of repertoire by the same composer. Examples include Beethoven Op.18, 59 or late quartets; Brahms quartets; Dvorák Quartets, etc. Each string quartet will receive one coaching and participate in the weekly two-hour class meetings. The class will focus on performance issues e.g., strokes, intonation and sound, and will culminate in performances of the complete works. Renaissance Recorder Ensemble 1-2 hours First and Second Semester. Study of performance on Renaissance recorders. Repertoire is chosen from a different area of concentration each semester. Notes: The one-hour credit option requires one coached rehearsal per week as well as outside practice and rehearsal. The two-hour credit option requires an additional one-hour per week for preparation of a performance/research project involving source materials related to the music or playing of Renaissance recorders.
