A
program of study abroad, the Oberlin Center of European
Studies, was inaugurated during the 1992-93 academic year
in Strasbourg, France, the birthplace of John Frederick
Oberlin. The program is designed to take advantage of Strasbourg's
role at the heart of the newly emerging European Union.
Seat of the European Council, and the European Court of
Human Rights, Strasbourg offers the facilities of a large
university, a national conservatory of music, national theater
and opera house, and numerous cultural attractions. For
more detailed information point your web browser at http://www.oberlin.edu/OCES.
Enrollment
in the Oberlin Center of European Studies is possible for
the first or second semester. Applications for an additional
semester will be considered. A multi-tiered curriculum,
offered in conjunction with the Université de Strasbourg,
will include a core curriculum in history, economics, international
studies, and political science, along with courses in French
language, literature, and culture. Direct access to university
courses in various appropriate subjects will be possible
for students whose linguistic preparation is sufficient.
Students majoring in performance interested in applied
music study may be able to enroll at the Conservatoire National
de Musique in Strasbourg.
The
Oberlin Center of European Studies will be directed by an
Oberlin faculty member and its program and operation will
be conducted by the director in collaboration with the Oberlin
Center of European Studies at Strasbourg Program Committee.
Admission
to the program is by application only, filed with the Oberlin
Center of European Studies at Strasbourg Program Committee.
Applications are filed in March for both the fall and spring
semesters, and, depending upon space, again in October for
the spring semester. Applications will be reviewed by the
program director and the program committee. Sophomores and
juniors will be given preference; qualified first-year students
may also apply. Applications will be judged on the basis
of faculty recommendations, academic preparation and performance,
and an interview. Students without prior college-level coursework
in French language will be required to participate in a
multi-week intensive language-immersion program prior to
the start of the regular semester.
The
cost of the program is equivalent to the cost of a semester
on-campus, which includes partial transatlantic airfare.
Financial aid applies as for students in residence at Oberlin.
Housing arrangements, provision of meals, and numerous cultural
activities are included in the cost of the program. Students
are responsible however, as usual, for additional costs
(textbooks, personal travel and entertainment, insurance
costs, incidentals and such).
Suspended
for 2002-2003.
