Fellowships: Overview

Fellowships are financial awards given to pursue research, study, or travel. A fellowship is similar to a scholarship, but usually carries more responsibility on the part of the recipient.

Students interested in applying for fellowships must complete the appropriate applications and often must also receive the nomination or endorsement of Oberlin College. This site lists each award and includes the eligibility requirements, application deadline/process and the name of the faculty advisor who will assist you with your application. Often, these faculty representatives have actually received the award that they are now advising you about.  Hard copy information sheets on each fellowship are available from Carol Sedgwick, Fellowship Coordinator, in the Office of Career Services, Stevenson-Longman. She can provide assistance in helping you decide what to apply for, reviewing/critiquing applications, and setting up practice interviews, as needed. She works closely with the faculty advisor of the fellowship for which you are applying.

Finding and applying for fellowships is a time-consuming process. The skills you develop in the process will help you in the future, whether or not you win an award. For example, you will learn how to write an effective resume and/or personal statement. You will learn how to organize your time and coordinate requests for transcripts and recommendations to meet a deadline.
