2007 Alumni Bowling Fun Raiser
The Intercollegiate Bowling Team is a student organization
that operates as a club sport. The Student Finance Committee allocates funds
for entry fees and travel expenses. Current Liasion (team captain, basically)
is Avi Miner '09. The Treasurer is Claudine Brenner
'09. Team practices on Monday afternoons incorporate discussions of team
business,
skill development drills and mini-competitions. Saturday morning practices
focus on team development and developing strategies for tackling tough tournament
conditions. Oberlin's men's and women's bowling teams compete against other
regional schools in
the American
Heartland
Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (September through March), as well as
the Wright State Raider Classic (November) and the Indiana Hoosier Classic
(February). We also host the OC Unconventional each April.
Although Oberlin is unable to offer bowling scholarships, the school does have
a large financial aid pool. Work-study positions are also available at the
campus bowling center, such as Lane Attendant, Mechanic, Coaching Assistant,
Office Assistant, and Pool Room Coordinator. Traveling members of the team
and staff are entitled to free practice and discounts on bowling supplies.
Intercollegiate bowling at Oberlin is complemented by three weekly intramural leagues, frequent intramural tournaments, and several community leagues that bowl at the campus center. College Lanes is a Sport Certified Center and offers regular Sport Bowling competition, including a PBA Experience League. Students may earn academic credit for taking beginning and advanced bowling classes offered through the Department of Athletics and Physical Education.
The bowling programs at College Lanes allow bowlers to approach the sport with their own desired level of fun and competitiveness. Also, if you are academically and/or musically oriented and want to attend a top liberal arts school with plenty of opportunities for bowling learning and competition on the side, then Oberlin could be the perfect choice.
