Steps for Student Employment

1.Log into PRESTO! to make sure you have a Federal Work-Study Award as part of your Financial Aid Package.

2. Go to the Oberlin College Classifieds on the Oberlin College website. Choose student jobs from the menu at the left and search for job listings at off-campus sites that require Federal College Work-Study awards. Look through the job offerings from community service organizations.

3. Contact the organizations that interest you most and apply for their jobs. Contact the person listed as the contact person via email or telephone to make further inquiries about the job. If you need help in finding the kind of job that best suits you, please contact Andy Frantz at the Center for Service and Learning at 775-8055.

4. Fill out required financial information at the Student Employment Office in Carnegie or at the Office of Financial Aid. These forms include an I-9 form, Ohio Tax form and a W-4. As in any type of employment, identification materials are required and must be originals (e.g. passport, birth certificate, social security card)

5. Go to the scheduled hours at your job as agreed upon by you and your supervisor. Show up on time and as regularly as possible. Maintain open communication with your employer about your schedule and any changes that may come up due to breaks, exams, etc. Contact your employer if you have to miss work!

6. You will be paid bi-weekly by turning in timecards to the Controller’s office at Oberlin College. Time cards with your name on them will arrive at your employer’s office once all paperwork is complete and has been processed. For the first pay period or two, use blank time cards and write your name and T# on it. Your paycheck will be sent directly to you. Click here to see the current pay schedule.

7. Reflect on your work experience in a way that works best for you. Meet regularly with your supervisor to discuss how the job is going. Come to bi-weekly reflection lunches hosted by the Center for Service and Learning to talk with peers who are also working in the community. Click here to visit the reflection section.
