Frequently Asked Questions

Where would I tutor?

That depends on what age children you work with. We work with Head Start and the Oberlin Early Childhood Center for preschoolers. Eastwood Elementary School is kindergarten through second grade and Prospect Elementary School is third through fifth grade. We also work with afterschool programs that serve children in the elementary grades.

Do I need a car to tutor?

No. You can walk to all sites except for Head Start, which is two miles from Oberlin going North on Rt. 58. If you would like to tutor at Head Start and do not own a car you may take advantage of Lorain County Transit's Dial-A-Ride service and receive reimbursement from America Reads.

What are these workshops and journals?

Workshops are designed to give you tutoring skills as well as to provide information about the community, literacy and education in general. They last one to two hours and are every other week. Journals provide you with a time to reflect on your tutoring experience. The coordinator will always give you a topic to write about and at times there will be a short reading. Journals should never take you more than one hour. You get paid for both the workshops and the journals.
